Weighted Companion Cube by Matarsak Weighted Companion Cube by Matarsak
1680 x 1050 wallpaper I created primarily for my own use.

Modeled and rendered in Cinema 4D, no postwork.

Edit: It's unfortunate that I have to say this, but apparently I do. You may ONLY re-post this elsewhere if you give credit and link to this page.

It would be nice if you also dropped me a line letting me know you've done so, and where.

Edit 2: Finally fixed the corner thing and re-rendered.

I like the textures you used on this, the tile looks very realistic and the cube itself does appear to be made out of some kind of steel or marble-esqe material. A couple minor details stand out to me though, the tiles appear to be perfectly cut, so that if you rubbed your finger along the long edge of one you would likely by cut. I think the tiles would look more natural if they were rounded along the edges. Also, the hearts on the companion cube are solid pink where the rest of the cube is a mixture of textures. If you could mix the textures together so that the pink flowed with the textures of the rest of the cube, I think this would be an ideal background

;p You know what would be really cool is if the pink lines on the cube actually glowed pink, now that would be neat :XD:

:plotting: Also, the lighting seems a tad dark; like it's leaning more towards cloudy day than the florescent lighting I think you were going for...
What do you think?

did you use boolean operations to cut the circles out of the cube. I'm racking my brain to figure out any other way of doing it. Boolean only works well when the object is very high poly. At least in my experience.

Yes. I grouped the corners and used modified cylinder objects to cut out the shapes. Polygon counts were moderately high (probably higher than they needed to be--I was still quite new to 3D modeling).

Thanks for the reply. I find that boolean works fine if you have high poly and do not use smooth shading.

Hey, I love the wallpaper. I did a photomanip using different game icons putting them onto the titles (for a friend)

I was wondering if you'd let me upload it to my dA. I could put it in scraps and of course give you credit. If not, though, that's fine.

Thanks.

You mean the Weighted Storage Cubes? Those are pretty much the exact same model, without the heart. I suppose I could do that.

The Weighted Companion Cube is featured in the PC Game Portal ([link]). The game is short but excellent, and has developed something of a cult following.

It's great, however there is one thing that bothers me a bit.

In the game, the metal of the box (the place with the heart and the corners) a bit more glossy.

If you could do that, it'd be perfect.

very good render! just one down part, the model is a tab bit off from the actual companion cube. None the less its a wonderful render!

Thanks. Yes, it isn't an exact replica--I went to some extent with what looked good, with the original cube as a reference, rather than try to carbon-copy it.
